hi it’s Greg from the atomic timekeeping
podcast today I want to talk about a
product that isn’t a clock but it’s made
by accurate and they make a lot of
clocks so they caught my attention this
is a digital thermometer hygrometer that
I want to talk about today maybe the
first thing you need to know about this
is the simplicity of it all it’s not an
indoor/outdoor unit it’s indoor only so
wherever you put this unit that’s where
it’s going to measure the humidity and
the temperature there are other units
that might do indoor/outdoor Wireless
whatever have a clock built-in those are
other units but I like the simplicity of
this one right here you see the current
humidity reading and over on the right
you’ll see the high and low extremes
from the last time at reset right here
is a trend arrow so here we see the
humidity has been trending downward
recently and over here is an icon
showing you whether or not it determines
the humidity is OK for the current
conditions based on the temperature so
it may be too high or too low or okay
that’s going to show up right here in
this display and again if the
temperature is higher or lower it’s
going to calculate the comfort zone
differently so very high temperature
conditions the comfort zone might be
different than it would be right now 32%
humidity is considered okay for this
temperature right now in the house okay
here you see again very simple display
the temperature the trend arrow in this
case it’s showing that the trend has
been upward and over here the high and
low extremes since the last time it
reset this clock is going to reset based
upon the time when you inserted the
battery so if you put in the battery at
6 o’clock in the morning then every day
at 6 o’clock in the morning it’s going
to reset the high and low extremes of
both humidity and temperature I chose
midnight so I stayed up to midnight put
the battery in at midnight and now every
night at midnight it resets maybe you
want to know if the high and low
extremes overnight in your office are
you know out of range something you
don’t want then maybe before you leave
the office at 5:00 p.m. just take out
the battery you reset that very elegant
very simple apart from all that there’s
only one button on here to set anything
and it’s right here on the back it’s
to choose between Celsius and Fahrenheit
just push the button and you’ll see the
temperature adjust now I’m showing
Celsius now it’s showing Fahrenheit
that’s all there is to it and then of
course here’s the battery compartment
open that up a battery inside they
recommend alkaline batteries for best
results I had some old heavy duty
batteries lying around and wanted to use
them up this thing doesn’t tend to use a
lot of battery very quickly so it seemed
to be getting you know my results are
just fine the performance is OK with a
heavy duty battery in there also in the
back you’re going to notice that it has
built-in stand you could fold that up
this way or if you just kind of fold it
out like this
there’s your stand so we can stand up by
itself you’ll notice on the back of that
stand is a magnetic strip so you can
place this on a refrigerator magnetic
shelf whatever you have it’ll stick to
something magnetic so a couple of ways
to mount it there as you decide where
you want to put it it’s also available
in a similar style here I found this one
at Walmart same exact display same exact
functions on the back of it it’s a
little bit different the battery battery
doors a little bit different but there’s
still a button right there to choose
between Celsius and Fahrenheit on the
display and on the back of the battery
door is again a little piece of magnetic
material so you can stick this to a
shelf or something magnetic each of
these styles is available online this
one I also found at my local Walmart
store for about nine dollars this one I
found at the local Home Depot store for
about ten dollars so easy to find if you
order them online you might find this is
available in red or blue or the black
that I found at Walmart this one at Home
Depot is available where that has this
white part there’s one that’s red kind
of a dark red and also one that’s black
so there are a variety of colors you can
pick whatever one fits best in your
decor as you look around you might also
find it in this style so slightly
different in that it has the high end
low extremes just below the current
conditions both on the human
and on the temperature the only thing
this is missing that the other units
have is the trend arrow to show if the
trend in humidity and temperature have
been steady or rising or going down
other than that very similar case very
similar stand and again the battery
compartment right there you may be
wondering what’s the useful range on
these things can use them in a very high
or very low temperature and humidity
conditions well keep in mind first of
all that it’s made for indoor use only
so you don’t want it to be getting wet
leave it in the rain something like that
here I just pulled this one out of my
freezer so you can see in my freezer
it’s 14 degrees right now and it’s
remained useful all the way down to
those low conditions I also left one in
my car in the summertime and it got up
above 140 degrees so that’s a pretty
good range I would say if you want to
measure those conditions also you’ll
notice here there’s the low icon showing
you that it’s decided that’s pretty low
humidity based on that temperature
compare that side-by-side with this one
that’s okay
for this temperature some people have
wondered about the overall accuracy of
these thermometers and as you can see
here they’re all an agreement with each
other as far as the current conditions
and they’re within what you know plus or
minus 2% I would say of each other as
far as the humidity reading so I’d say
that’s pretty good all of the ones I’ve
purchased are pretty much in agreement
with each other I suppose if you wanted
something just really scientifically
accurate you might have to go with
something a little bit more expensive
than 9 or 10 dollars each but for the
vast majority of us this is going to be
well within the accuracy that we would
need to monitor the conditions wherever
we want to leave these here’s one I just
pulled out of the storage room under my
front porch which is basically a big
concrete box as you can see it was 46
degrees in there 82% humidity so I’ve
got to watch out when I store in there
and according to the comfort indicator
that’s too high for comfort but it’s
okay for storage of the things I like to
keep in there so there you go folks is
the
you’re right indoor digital hygrometer
and thermometer pick these up man next
time you’re at Walmart or Home Depot or
shopping online Amazon or you can go
directly to accurate comm and that’s the
only place I’ve found a good variety of
the colors on this particular model so
any of those places and for that price
pick up a handful of them keep one in
the bedroom one in the kitchen storage
room shed the garage in the car nice to
know what kind of temperature extremes
are going on there I’ve seen these in
professional applications I’ve been in
operating rooms doing videos for doctors
and they might have one of these just
sitting on a shelf in the o.r all the
time so they can constantly monitor the
temperature currently and the extremes
and the humidity of course as well I
know of a place that has an industrial
style inkjet printer that’s you know
this wide for printing a lot of you know
big-time professional stuff they keep
one of these right next to their inkjet
printer all the time because they try to
control the temperature and humidity in
that room to minimize the amount of ink
clogs and other problems they might have
with an inkjet printer you can probably
think of dozens of other reasons you
would want to know the current
conditions and the extremes in some spot
where you can just place one of these
very quietly out of the way let me show
you one more thing before I close
because my wife wondered how strong is
this magnet let’s do a little test let’s
stick this one to something metal how
about this hammer okay shake it around
like that it’s slipping a little bit but
it’s holding on there pretty well that’s
pretty vigorous oh okay I finally got it
to fall off so let’s try one of these
other ones with this different style see
how well that sticks to our hammer head
again that’s pretty good you got to
shake that thing pretty well to knock it
off well I think that’s all you need to
know thanks for watching
no just kidding okay
