hello and welcome to this short video to
introduce you to your wheelchair this
wheelchair has been loaned to you for an
agreed fixed period if you require it
for longer please contact us as soon as
possible and we can discuss extending
the loan period your wheelchair is quite
a simple piece of equipment and takes
just a few steps to be ready for use
while a range of wheelchairs feature in
this video all steps shown apply to the
chair you have step 1 opening your
wheelchair there is a safety bar at the
back of the wheelchair release the
velcro strap that is holding the bar in
place near the wheel to open the
wheelchair stand to the side of the
chair and place your hands on either
side of the seat push down on the seat
canvas until the chair is fully opened
never put your fingers between the frame
and the seat swing the safety bar and
attach it to the second handlebar fix
the velcro strap to the handlebar step 2
getting into the wheelchair before
sitting in the wheelchair always apply
the brakes on both sides of the chair by
pushing the brake levers forward once
that comfortably in the chair move the
foot plates into position release the
footrest catch swing the footrest around
to the front of the chair
do this on both sides of the chair drop
the foot plates down place your feet on
the foot plates if your chair has foot
straps make sure these are at the back
of your feet if required secure an ankle
strap between the foot plates step 3
adjusting the wheelchair if you need to
adjust the height of the foot plates to
ensure your legs are properly supported
there is an adjusting net on the foot
plates that you can loosen you will need
an allen key to do this some of our
wheelchairs have our clips to keep the
foot plates in place during transit you
will need to remove these before
adjusting the length of the foot plates
the our clips do not need to be
reattached the wheelchair when you are
using it step 4
using the wheelchair
please wear the lap belt when using the
wheelchair release the brakes by pulling
the brake levers backwards use your
right hand to turn the wheelchair left
and your left hand to turn right when
using the wheelchair go uphill forwards
and downhill backwards you will find
some basic tips for using your
wheelchair in the information that
accompanied your delivery we would like
to draw your attention to a few key
points going up a curb push the front
wheels into the curb
tell the person in the wheelchair that
you’re going to tilt the wheelchair
backwards
place your foot onto the bar at the
bottom of the wheelchair by the wheels
use the bar to help tip the wheelchair
back with your foot push the wheelchair
in so that the back wheels touch the
curb and then roll the wheelchair up the
curb going down the curb go backwards
down the curb making sure you check for
traffic first tell the person in the
wheelchair that you’re going down the
curb roll the back wheels down then roll
the wheelchair back until the front
wheels are clear of the curb step 5
getting out of the wheelchair to get out
of the wheelchair always apply the
brakes on both sides of the chair take
your feet off the foot plates place the
foot plates in the upright position and
swing them to the side place your hands
on the armrests to support yourself
place your feet on the floor and push
yourself up step 6
folding the wheelchair untie the velcro
strap around the safety bar and return
the bar to a vertical hanging position
secure the bar to the base of the
wheelchair with a velcro strap fold up
the foot plates stand to the side of the
wheelchair and gently lift the seat
canvas from the middle making sure your
fingers don’t get pinched in the metal
frame step 7 cleaning the wheelchair we
ask that you clean your wheelchair
before returning it to us to clean the
wheelchair seat and back
warm soapy water with a cloth or sponge
to clean the wheels and wheel rims use
hot soapy water with a soft brush
optional loading the wheel chair into a
vehicle your wheelchair is a heavy piece
of equipment and you need to be careful
when lifting it to load the chair into a
car first take off the velcro strap from
the safety bar and unscrew and remove
the bar
remember to reattach the bar and strap
before using the wheelchair again remove
the footplate and place them into the
cart with the bar and strap if you need
to make the wheelchair smaller you can
lower the handles by pressing on the
latches at the base of the handles lift
the wheelchair into either the boot or
the back seat of the car if the
wheelchair is on the back seat please
hold it in place with the seat belt
optional adding a leg rest or removing
the arm rests you may also have borrowed
a leg rest with your wheelchair which
can easily be attached and removed
remove the footplate and attach the leg
rest in the same place you can adjust
the length of the leg rest by pressing
on the metal catch halfway down the rest
to remove the arm rests release the
lever at the base of the armrest
this will allow you to slide onto a bed
or a commode reverse this action to
replace the armrest British Red Cross
equipment is safety checked before each
loan however it is important that the
equipment is checked regularly for signs
of damage please report any damage to
the Red Cross immediately damaged
equipment should not be used unless this
has been discussed if you have any
