How to Measure Blood Pressure in Children?
Video
Transcript
hi I’m dr. David Hill and today we’re
going to talk about how to measure blood
pressure and children when we got to
measure anybody’s blood pressure really
there are two commonly used techniques
one that’s growing more and more popular
is an electronic device that has an
automatic blood pressure cup the device
pumps air into the cuff and then a
sensor within the device listens for the
sound of heartbeats in the vessel
usually the vessel of the arm as the
blood flow returns the computer listens
for those sounds and calculates an
appropriate blood pressure this system
works really really well and people who
have a good normal steady heartbeat in
people who don’t have any abnormalities
of their blood vessels or heart
abnormalities and it gives a good
general picture what the blood pressure
is you can buy similar systems for the
home these are automatic blood pressure
cuffs to be used in the home the other
way that we do it which you’d consider
the old-fashioned way is a doctor nurse
or other trained professional like an
EMT uses a manual cuff with a little air
bulb does the same thing you pump air
into the cuff around the arm but instead
of using a computer to hear the sound
use a stethoscope again you’re listening
for the sound of blood flow returning to
the artery in the arm that’s been
squeezed off by the air this is an
important method to use when the blood
pressure is in doubt or when there’s
some sort of abnormality or irregularity
in the heartbeat or problem with the
heart that makes blood flow sometimes a
little bit irregular so if I’m worried
about a blood pressure and a child for
some reason I’ll often recheck it myself
rather than just trusting the Machine
now there are a few important rules
about taking blood pressure right the
most important is to get a cuff that’s
the right size you’ll see on all blood
pressure cuffs that they’re marked with
a little white line and when you fasten
them one side of the cuff ought to fold
within the zone that’s marked by the
white line a cuff that’s too large for
an arm will give a reading that’s
artificially low a cuff that’s too small
for an arm you guessed it will read too
I see I’m sure the cuff is the right
size the other thing you want is to make
sure that the arm is in the correct
position the vessel in the arm should be
at the level of the heart now a baby
who’s lying on a table that’s kind of
automatic but if somebody’s sitting or
standing you want to support the arm up
a little bit so it’s not just lying at
the side having it down too far may
artificially elevate the blood pressure
reading that you get you don’t want the
patient tensing the muscle and holding
your arm up you want to support it
yourself for heaven on a surface where
its resting easily you’ll also obviously
like your patient in a calm comfortable
situation if they’re upset or in pain
it’s going to raise the blood pressure
and if what you want to know is with the
blood pressure normally is you’re not
going to find that out that way so
talking about how to check blood
pressure and a child I’m dr. David Hill

Pediatric Blood Pressure Cuff Review
A pediatric blood pressure cuff is a type of device that is used by doctors to monitor a patient’s blood pressure as they go about their daily activities. These cuff are usually made of a flexible cuff that fits around a person’s wrist and allows them to wear them as they go about their day to day activities. They can be used on children as young as four or five years old.
A pediatric blood pressure cuff is not used to monitor patients that are older. This cuff is used to monitor children. The use of these cuff has become a common practice in the medical world. The reason for this is that there are a lot of children who are born with some kind of abnormality that makes them prone to low blood pressure.
If a child has been born with this abnormality then they are more prone to low blood pressure than a baby that is not born with the same type of abnormality. These blood pressure cuffs are designed to monitor a child’s blood pressure while they are taking their daily medications and before they go to bed at night. They can also be used to monitor the amount of oxygen that a child takes in and they can be used in conjunction with a hospital ventilator to monitor a patient’s oxygen levels.
The pediatric blood pressure cuff has been around for a few decades and it has been shown to be effective in measuring blood pressure. They are designed so that they can easily be adjusted in size to fit around a child’s wrist and they can be worn all the time so that a parent or caretaker can keep track of their child’s blood pressure at all times.
If a child has had a blood pressure monitoring device made specifically for them then this can be very helpful for them as well. These blood pressure monitoring devices are designed to give a child a reading on a daily or weekly basis which means that a parent will be able to find out if there is an abnormality in their child’s blood pressure.
There are a lot of benefits to using the best pediatric blood pressure cuff. They are easy to use and they are a good way to keep track of your child’s blood pressure while they are taking their medications. They are also easy to use as they are easy to read and they have a clear indicator that will show the child’s blood pressure in real time.
Children Blood Pressure Monitor
The Children Blood Pressure Monitor is one of the many monitoring tools which can be used in different clinics and hospitals today. It is basically a machine that has been developed to automatically measure the blood pressure of an individual with the use of a computerized chip and a radio signal. The main advantage of this kind of Children Blood Pressure Monitor is that it does not require the presence of any medical professional to manually start and stop the machine. All you need to do is just to press a button when it is necessary.
Today, there are wide ranges of products available on the market which come in different sizes, color and features as well. It is basically up to you to choose the product that would best suit the needs of your clinic or hospital. In addition, the Children Blood Pressure Monitor is available in many different brands that include the Sanyo, Omron, Phillips and A&D monitor. It is also possible for you to purchase this digital blood pressure monitor online.
As soon as you are able to get your hands on a digital blood pressure monitor, you will find that it is easy and simple to use. Children have unique blood pressure needs and you should make sure that you buy a device that will easily measure the right amount of blood pressure in the child. You will also notice that most of these devices are portable and very easy to transport. You should always keep in mind that once you have installed the Children Blood Pressure Monitor, it must be used in accordance with the directions given on the instruction manual. Failure to follow these instructions may result to various complications.
Pediatric Blood Pressure Guide
Normal blood pressure for kids (89-110) may not be high enough. If your child is young, high blood pressure is usually caused by a sedentary lifestyle, which can be changed with some changes in diet and activity. Your doctor will be able to tell you whether your little one’s normal blood pressure is high enough for hypertension. A high reading could indicate that your preschooler is at risk for future hypertension, even though he or she has already had some lifestyle changes and is still within the age for major disease.
When we talk about the size of pediatric blood pressure cuff that should be used on infants and very small children, the measurement comes in at 4×8 cm for newborns, 6×12 cm for infants and 9×18 cm for older children. This size of pediatric cuff is one that has been tried and tested and it has worked for many different sizes of infants. The size of the cuff will change slightly as a baby grows larger because the amount of room that you will have to work with when it comes to getting an accurate reading is going to be smaller. However, for smaller infants this is a good size that will allow for the proper placement of the cuff on the arm.

This blood pressure cuff was purchased for use in a school health office for students in grades K through 6. You can’t beat the low cost for the amount of value you get. For students who are allergic to latex, the cuff is navy in color, and the tubing is latex-free. This was a deciding factor in choosing this BP cuff over those in this price range. The pressure gauge assembly is substantial and well-balanced. The only flaw in the gauge is the transparent cover, which is plastic and feels cheap; hence, the four-star ranking. The gauge’s most important feature, however, is that its needle glides at a constant deflation rate, allowing for fast and accurate readings.
Both the 732bk and 732mcc are multiple cuff kits with the 804 sygmanometer that I own. The Mcc model is significantly lighter, and the material feels different. The hand pump connector on the BK model is larger. I bought this model thinking I’d be able to swap out the cuffs and pump, but I can’t because the connector is a different size. While I agree that Adc is a good brand, I disagree with EMT’s one-star rating. The standard of each item you order can vary. If the Velcro on the cuff does not remain in place, the patient may require a larger cuff. I use these for my patients on a daily basis and have never had a problem with the Velcro. These should be cleaned and maintained; I dropped mine and it did not break.
While my husband, who enjoys a good problem/puzzle/challenge, was able to figure out how to use this gadget, if you are unfamiliar with it, you can be as lost and perplexed as I was. When we (he) knew how to use and read it, it seemed to work well. However, the earpiece was painfully tight, as though it had been designed for an infant. I understand this is intended for use by children, but not like that! ; ) We had to return it because each short use was basically leaving marks in his ears.
My younger sister had heart surgery and is very little. We required a pediatric size cuff to reliably take her blood pressure every day after she lost more weight as a result of the operation. This was ideal!
This is a fantastic device that works flawlessly. The only flaw is the cuff size. I bought a child’s cuff, but it looks like an adult’s.
