This was purchased for my AirCare Model MA0800 humidifier. I tried a few others before this one, and they all have the same bad design. The filter fits the unit without having to be trimmed to fit, which the others did not, and it appears to be a bit stiffer material than others I have tried. So, if you need a MAF2 filter, this could be the best one available.
Having said that, the overall design is dreadful. Maybe it’s because they have to fit so many different model units, but I don’t see why there isn’t some kind of frame around the filter to prevent sagging. Which WILL happen at some point, severely limiting the unit’s ability to provide humidity. So, if your unit runs continuously, like mine, expect to replace the filter every 4-6 weeks. If it had a frame, you could flip it and get a little more life out of it because the top half stays relatively clean compared to the bottom, which is submerged in water.
That being said, this is the best one available, and I tried two others from different manufacturers. So I’m giving it four stars because, in my opinion, it’s the best MAF2 replacement available, not because it’s a great filter.
I’ve decided to replace my furnace humidifier with a larger unit, in the hopes of eliminating the need for the portable entirely.
So, first and foremost, these fit perfectly, and there is nothing to complain about. The most common complaint was that the filter material was flimsy and prone to falling out. Looking at it, it’s only glued at the top and bottom, so these sides are free to move around, and yes, the material is thin, so it doesn’t take much to get it out of place. I took out my trusty hot glue gun and finished gluing the sides with no glue. I also added some across the middle, but I don’t think you need it. If you have a hot glue gun and get these, I would recommend gluing the unglued side to make it more rigid and less likely to fall apart.
So they’re cheap enough that I’m not going to make a big deal about it, but I understand what people are saying. Find the problem and fix it, and then you’ll have nothing to complain about.
This is attached to the back of the Essick/Bemis unit. It WILL reduce the amount of dust and crud that enters the back of the unit and contaminates the saturated wick used to humidify. The better the unit humidifies, the cleaner and higher quality the wick unit (1041).
It’s not designed to suck particulate matter out of the air like a vacuum cleaner, but it WILL keep airborne dust, smoke, and pollen from contaminating the wick unit, and that’s worth it in and of itself.
Furthermore, if you suffer from seasonal allergies like I do, I’ve discovered that running the humidifier in the spring helps to alleviate them. While another reviewer claimed to have found no cat hair on the filter, consider the size of the pollen or dander allergen in comparison to a cat hair. I also don’t have cat hairs flying around a foot or more above the floor… This was discussed with my allergist. He stated that the allergen is cat DANDER, not cat hair, and that it is at least 1,000 times the size of a cat hair, if not smaller. That is what this filter is intended to catch. Pollen, smoke, and so on. It also reduces odor because a carbon filter is included.
Yes, according to the manufacturer, this is a ‘optional’ AIR PURIFYING FILTER, but if you suffer from seasonal allergies, you’ll understand why…
As a hint, change your wick element frequently, but one of these should last you the entire season… I buy one of these every heating season, and it easily lasts me five or six months into the spring, and I could probably stretch it even further if necessary…
