It was easy to set up. I took my time and finished it in about three hours. I’ve had it for about a month. It’s fantastic. It doesn’t “waste” as much water as I expected. I route the discharge through a Beckett condensate pump that is shared by the A/C unit. When the humidifier is turned on, it only works once per heat cycle. It is more than enough for our 2600 square foot home. Even though the humidistat is located in the supply air stream to the HVAC unit, the setting must be kept considerably lower than the scale on the humidistat suggests. This may be due to the position of the humidistat or simply calibration. I have it set to around 22 degrees Fahrenheit, and it is currently about 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the kitchen. Before you start making holes, make sure you know where your A/C evaporator is.
I have a scale filter in the water line, and some of the scale deposit blows on the inside of the cover. I’m not sure if it will be different with the paper pad or the OEM one. The replacement filter is made of paper, while the original is not.

First and foremost, this product is very capable. I’ve been using Aprilaire for a long time, and this model has a good reputation and is well-made. My commentary here is intended to help you decide whether or not to take on this project yourself. Background information: My house is 25 years old, and the furnace has a vintage Aprilaire humidifier model 440. My unit stopped working completely, so I decided to replace it with this much more capable model 500 instead of fixing the old one.
This 5000-square-foot home has two units that span three floors. The basement unit is in charge of the basement and main floor air conditioning. The upstairs air is supplied by the attic unit. Since it is in Utah, I initially had a local HVAC company come and install a power humidifier in the attic (as they recommended), as well as plenty of insulation and protection from freezing. After a slew of problems and complaints about leaks and other hazards, I had them come take it out and refund my money.
