I’m a doctor who has been using these monitors for 15 years. They are of high quality and extremely accurate. I check it against a mercury sphygmomanometer on a regular basis, and it is always within 2-3 mmHg. All BP monitors should be checked against the mercury sphygmomanometer. When compared to a mercury sphyg, it is more accurate and reproducible than the hospital’s electronic cuffs. The cuff is especially simple to put on one-handed. These monitors appear to be accurate for 6 to 8 years before needing replacement. I’m still on my second one, with a third in reserve in case this one fails. This blood pressure monitor comes highly recommended by me.

Correct. I found it to be within 5 points of my doctor’s. Given the variability of blood pressure, that’s a pretty close call. Blood pressure can fluctuate rapidly, and even minor movements or relaxation can cause significant changes. This is the second one I’ve purchased. My first one, which is now in my upstairs bedroom, I purchased in 2010. I purchased the second one in September 2020 for use down stairs because climbing the stairs to measure blood pressure raises blood pressure, making it difficult to obtain a proper “resting” blood pressure reading. It is critical to follow the instructions/recommendations in order to obtain accurate readings.

My cardiologist advised me to purchase a home blood pressure monitor. This Life Source model UA-789 with the XL cuff was problematic from the start. I carefully followed the instructions and was eventually able to read. I would wait more than 5 minutes between retry attempts and even removed all batteries and unplugged the cuff’s cord. I reasoned that starting from the beginning each time would give me the best chance of getting it right the first time. Only one out of every five attempts would result in a reading. Occasionally, the machine would provide a reading. The failed attempts consisted of puffing up the cuff, counting down, and then – nothing. It would freeze and not reset, and it would not try to do another reading even after waiting, squeezing down the cuff, and sitting in the correct position. I have a tendency to have low blood pressure, and my current medications for another issue could cause it to drop dangerously low. The machine would give me extremely high readings that I had never received in a hospital, doctor’s office, or specialty clinic. The support representative responded that the machine was fine and that I most likely did not have the cuff on properly. I explained that I could get some readings on my own, so the cuff must have been properly positioned at some point, but the machine was inconsistent. My doctor, he said, would have to calibrate it. When I stated that I would prefer a refund, he hung up and said, “Have a nice day.” My only response was a perplexed-sounding “OK.” I was so taken aback that I just sat quietly for a moment before beginning to write the review. I’m dealing with enough life-threatening issues as it is, so I’m not planning a large campaign around this device. It’s time to throw out the trash and try something new.
