San Jose Clinics
The Missionary Sisters of Immaculate Conception have operated the San Jose Clinic since 1946. They also run the St. Elizabeth Hospital in Houston's Fifth Ward. However, in 1954, Bishop Wendelin Nold appealed to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word to take over the clinic. This new management took effect on June 1.
The layoffs affect about 180 employees at eight clinics in the Bay Area. The SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West union is urging the El Camino Hospital Board of Directors to protect these jobs. The company announced the layoffs in a letter sent to union members on Jan. 25. In August 2018, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.
One clinic in Santa Clara County was among the first to offer the COVID-19 vaccine after it was cleared for emergency use by federal regulators and expert panels. Local health care providers and pharmacies scrambled to secure this vaccine. Other Bay Area counties are also planning to roll out the vaccines for children.
