The Invacare Set-Up Guide for Tilt-in-space Wheelchairs

Video

Transcript

hi I’m PJ Anderson I work for invacare
as the European group product manager
and I am an occupational therapist by
profession I have been working with
wheelchair users and product development
for many years
setting up someone in a wheelchair can
sometimes be a challenge and there are
different approaches that can be taken
this video will show one approach using
the Invacare Rio Dahlia 45 the goal when
doing a wheelchair setup is to achieve a
good posture to encourage mobility and
movement the use should have as close to
neutral pelvis position as possible and
the head should be well balanced with
the horizontal line between ears and
eyes from the side the head should be in
line with the trochanter and there
should be good contact between the
wheelchair in the body for efficient
pressure distribution preferably the
user should sit into the seat rather
than on top of it for efficient weight
distribution before starting the setup I
always make sure the user is not sliding
out with the chair by tilting it
slightly be careful not to tilt the
chair too much otherwise the head will
naturally go forward this will increase
the kyphosis
on the spine and the posterior rotation
of the pelvis making it difficult to do
an accurate setup
the backrest should then be slightly
reclined to open up the hip joint I
always thought to set up by removing the
footrest and placing costumes or box or
something similar to create the right
height for the feet usually the user
will place the feet at the depth in
which their hamstrings are relaxed check
at this point to make sure that there is
no pressure behind a nice relaxed
hamstrings of the user is the most
important precondition when setting up a
wheelchair if they are not relaxed the
pelvis will go into a posterior position
next ensure the user is sitting well
into the seat and that the seat depth is
good you can check this by placing your
fingers between the seat and the inside
of the knee you should only be able to
get two or three fingers in the gap
if the see tap needs to be adjusted used
in close their lanky and adjust the seat
depth by undoing the screws which are
located in the middle under the seat
frame if the seat width needs to be
adjusted simply undo the screws located
on the receipt it can be widened up to
50 millimeter on each side the maximum
and adjustment range can only be set
with small rear wheels please note the
uses sides should just be touching the
side rest to ensure a good posture and
to avoid too much pressure if required
the tension adjustable backrest can also
be adjusted in width by undoing the four
screws the backrest tube can slide
outwards and forwards to 45 degree angle
the seat cushion that has been chosen
for this user as a slight curvature that
gives guidance for legs and allow space
for the protruding sitting bones next we
look at the backrest frame I’ve chosen
the Flex retention adjustable backrest
as the straps can be adjusted to the
users body shape and requirement
start by opening each strap and define
where the user needs to have firm
support tighten that strap well at this
point and then fastened additional
straps accordingly
the shorter cover follows the defined
shape of the backrest
it is important that the headrest is in
the correct position supporting under
the scalp to give the user support when
the chair is tempted and recline the
headrest has many adjustment
possibilities such as height depth angle
and the wings can also be angled to
achieve the correct position tilt the
chair slightly add the headrest angle
the wings and check the support by
carefully moving the head next we will
look at the armrests the height of the
armrests should be set at the level in
which the shoulders are relaxed but the
arms are still supported for a good
seating posture if the armrest needs to
be adjusted use the allen key and open
the screws in order to adjust the height
now it’s time to attach the leg rest and
place the users feet in the selected
position as mentioned at the beginning
of the video
if needed the height of the foot place
can be adjusted by undoing the screw on
the back of the leg rest and do it
slightly so the foot rest you can slide
you will be able to feel where the
preset indentations are located to set
it to the correct height for the user
the foot rest can be adjusted in both
depth and angle by simply undoing the
screw on the side with an allen key and
adjusting it accordingly if the user
needs a wider setting on the leg rest
the foot plates can move away from each
other by undoing the screws under the
front of the seat the leg rest can
individually slide 50 millimeter
outwards next have a check to make sure
the user is sitting well into the seat
by checking their back their pelvis area
and legs check the support is where you
would like to have it by pressing in the
finger now we define the checks and the
setup is complete check the hamstrings
to make sure they are relaxed and also
check the user’s midline position
thank you for watching and I hope that
you found this video useful

Anti tippers for Invacare wheelchair
Anti-tippers for Invacare wheelchairs are a necessary product for all users. In these hard times of rising transportation costs, wheelchairs and other mobility devices have become very important to seniors, disabled, and injured individuals. Because so many of these individuals need to spend time in their wheelchairs, there are numerous ways in which to transport them. While some individuals choose to utilize large vehicles to transport wheelchairs, others must find other means.

One way that they can achieve this is by purchasing an invacare wheelchair ramp. Whether you are purchasing one for yourself or someone else, you will need to know how to properly install an anti-torque lift in order to safely and securely transport your wheelchair. By consulting the safety manual for your particular wheelchair, you will be able to determine the proper installation technique for it. Once the instructions are read, you should practice using the ramp in the vehicle prior to actually transporting it to the location where you will be using it. This will help you familiarize yourself with the procedure, as well as learn how to secure it so that it will remain stable during your vehicle’s drive.

Another item that can be purchased to help in Wheeling a wheelchair is a trolley jack. Many wheelchairs cannot be driven onto a standard automobile jack, so most wheelchairs cannot be operated with the traditional jacks. However, an invacare wheelchair ramp is compatible with jacks, as they are both hydraulic and electric. By providing a ramp that can be driven onto these power equipments, you can ensure the continued safe and reliable transportation of your wheelchair into and out of your home or place of business.

When I was in the hospital, my wheelchair arrived. My husband threw away the package, and when I got home, I tried it and it wasn’t level. I’m really disappointed because it’s all heading to one side. I’ve been using a wheelchair for over 15 years. The chair was inexpensive, but I’m disappointed that it’s out of alignment. I’m not sure how to handle it. It does not seem to be flexible. I used to have the same wheelchair about 6 years ago, but it wears out, and the seat is extended and rests on the crossbar. For many years, I thought it was fantastic, and I was thrilled to have it in black to replace the older, worn-out edition. Please let me know how I can resolve this problem.

My only negative remark is half-negative, half-positive. Please keep in mind that the footrests ship separately from the wheelchair. When my wheelchair arrived without the footrests, I was worried, so I contacted the seller, who informed me that the footrests ship separately. So I looked to see if there was any tracking information for my footrests, but there wasn’t. As a result, I contacted them a second time. This time, they informed me that my footrests (the ones with loops) were out of stock, but that they could ship an alternate version. I didn’t particularly like the loop concept, so I suggested an alternative. They sent out a new package of footrests, which arrived today.

We’ve been using this wheelchair for about 2-3 months and love it. We chose the smaller size because we have an older home and this model would fit through the narrower doorways (tight but it fits). The narrower seat also accommodates the individual for whom we are using it (5’2″, 110lbs). The ride is smooth, and the leg attachments work properly. We used the next size up, and they are both identical in weight and storage space.

My only complaint (small complaint) is that the leg attachments do not adjust low enough (i.e. lower to the ground), making it more difficult for anyone with restricted leg mobility to raise their leg/foot up higher than intended. It’s not a deal breaker.
