Wheelchair Seat Belt Review
If you’re buying a standard electric wheelchair, most likely your wheelchair will come with a simple seat belt. However, if you’re buying an electric-powered manual wheelchair then chances are that you’ll need to purchase your seat belt separately from your wheelchair. In this instance, you should keep an eye on the safety features, such as the presence of an appropriate seat belt, and always check the instructions that come with your wheelchair before buying it. If you know how, you can even get advice from someone who knows first hand what a good seatbelt should do.
If you don’t want to purchase your chairseatbelt separately, then you can opt to install your own seatbelt on your wheelchair. This may sound like a lot of work but it really isn’t. All you need is a little bit of assembly, and you’ll have an easy time installing your own seatbelt in your electric wheelchair.
It is important to make sure that you follow all the instructions provided by the manufacturer of your wheelchair. There are many manuals available and even videos to help guide you through the process. It’s important to make sure that your seatbelt fits properly in order to ensure safety and ease of use.
You’ll need to install the seatbelt in your electric wheelchair by using a special tool known as a seat belt pliers. The seat belt should fit your wheelchair perfectly. Ensure that your belt is placed correctly. You should place it around the waist and make sure that it goes around the back and through the armrests. In order to achieve this, try tightening one end of the belt by pulling it through the buckle but make sure that the belt still has enough room for it to move through the belt loops on your wheelchair.
In case your belt has been installed correctly, take off the backstop from the backside, and fold it back so that it doesn’t come undone when you put your chair back into place. This is very important. You don’t want to find yourself with your back facing the floor once you put your wheelchair in place.
Make sure to secure your seat belt to the base frame of the chair. You’ll need to do this using a couple of screws. Use some tape to seal the screws in place and make sure that you follow the directions for installing the screws properly. Once your seatbelt has been secured, it’s time to tighten it back up to its previous position to ensure safety.
Wheelchair seat belts can be a contentious issue in terms of safety and comfort for individuals using wheelchairs. Here are some pros and cons to consider when using a wheelchair seat belt:
Pros of using wheelchair seat belt
- Safety: Wheelchair seat belts can help prevent falls and injuries during transportation or movement in the wheelchair. Studies have shown that lap belts can reduce the risk of head impact forces in wheelchair tips.
- Compliance with the law: In some jurisdictions, the use of a seat belt in a wheelchair is required by law, similar to seat belts in cars.
- Easy to use: Clip style belts with a female and male locking system are simple to use and are similar to the types found on backpacks.
Cons of using wheelchair seat belt
- Restriction of movement: Using a seat belt while in a wheelchair for extended periods of time can restrict the ability of the occupant to reposition effectively and can in some cases lead to an increase in discomfort in the waist or lower back. This can also lead to increased potential for the development of pressure sores.
- Risk of injury: Lap belts on wheelchairs can become a nuisance and even a danger, especially if they are not used properly. Studies show that most of the deaths that occur as a result of lap restraints on wheelchairs occur due to strangulation.
- Considered a restraint: In some situations, adding a seat belt to a wheelchair is considered a restraint. Whether the patient can easily unbuckle the seat belt and is aware of when it would be safe to do so, would likely be required in trying this option.
Overall, the use of a wheelchair seat belt should be considered based on the specific needs and preferences of the individual using the wheelchair. Safety concerns should be weighed against the potential discomfort and risk of injury associated with the use of the seat belt. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before deciding to use a wheelchair seat belt.

Before making this purchase, make sure to measure it. It wasn’t flimsy or anything, but it was just too short. This purchase was made to replace a broken belt on my mobility chair. I didn’t measure and assumed the new one would be sufficient. Big blunder! It would be suitable for a pediatric mobility chair or for someone of small stature. Even if you have a teeny-tiny waist (adult), I believe you would have a problem wearing a jacket or coat. Fortunately, I was able to simply swap the buckle and hardware from this new one. What snapped was the plastic casing that encased the old buckle. I’m glad my brother noticed that they could be swapped, and I’m relieved to be back in my mobility chair.
I purchased this set to replace one that had one side cut too short. The buckle appears to be of high quality, but it is difficult to release for someone who does not have strong hands. They probably couldn’t be used in a nursing home because the code requires the user to be able to unfasten them without assistance.
I got this seat-belt because I bought a new wheelchair and it didn’t come with a seat-belt, so I bought this one. This seat belt works well and makes me feel secure while traveling outside in my wheelchair, which is why I bought it. Though it was stated that no tools were required to install this seat-belt on the wheelchair, I was unable to install it myself and had to have it installed by someone else, who had to use a screwdriver to secure the seat-belt to the chair. Having said that, I still give this seatbelt five stars because it fulfills its purpose for me.
